 At R3 you will be helping us build cutting edge of decentralized operating system technology, Corda. Corda is designed for running complex workflows between businesses, without any centralized points of control. You will work on a system trusted by banks, insurance companies, stock exchanges, payments companies, and others – highly demanding industries with many interesting technical challenges.

Reporting to the Chief Engineering Officer, as Head of Engineering Strategy and Services your focus will be on ensuring we have the right strategy, people, and skills, to deliver our Corda products. You will also be responsible for all service provision, including build, test, and production services.

Some of your responsibilities will see you:

  • Oversee the development all all engineering services related to Corda, including build, test, and production systems.
  • Guide our strategy for delivering products and services, and leading any new initiatives that may arise.
  • Work closely with the teams delivering Corda software to establish appropriate KPIs for all engineering functions and the engineers within them.
  • Lead our hiring to ensure we always have the right talent within the team.
  • Seek opportunities to mentor our people.
  • Identify opportunities to nurture and develop our engineering talent to let us deliver our products and services most effectively, while helping the team achieve the most in their careers.
  • Be a manager of engineering managers and a role model for them.
  • Evolve and own the learning and development curriculum for the division including internal and external training opportunities.
  • Shape our culture, policies, and standards.
  • Build capacity for teams to achieve current and future business needs.
  • Co-ordinate with Engineering Operations and Finance to set budgets and hiring plans.
  • Ensure we continue to build a team with diverse viewpoints and that promotes inclusivity.

About you:

  • You have a deep understanding of engineering and understand the journey that the team is on. You have seen how to get the best from people, how things can go wrong, and know the difference. Your experience, and drive to improve, makes you a credible leader who is trusted by stakeholders across the company. Your team understands you know how to will work with them to help everyone succeed. You are passionate about people, quality, and engineering agility, framed by a desire to provide the best possible products and services for our customers.

You are:

  • Familiar with the challenges of software development leadership, having previously worked as a software engineer at a senior level.
  • Knowledgable about defining and delivering production-grade services.
  • An experienced manager, who can evidence how you have guided teams of 10+ high-performing engineers, including seniors and tech leads.
  • Able to operate as a peer of both technical and non-technical stakeholders and be recognised for the value you bring to both.
  • An expert in agile software development practices and can recognise which ones are most appropriate for any given problem.
  • A skilled coach, able to pass on the expertise you have gained throughout your career.
  • Able to lead with empathy, support the whole person and care deeply about the wellbeing, development and continuous improvement of every engineer in the team.
  • A strong communicator who is able to set expectations of what a high-performing engineering team looks like and lead the team there.
  • A good judge of engineering talent, with a background in hiring and recruiting the best
  • Able to help define organisational structures, and see both the benefits and the inevitable trade-offs in any structure.
