Superintendencia Financiera de Colombia Joins R3’s Global Member Network as Part of Its Fintech Strategy (English and Spanish)

English.. Spanish version below.

November 1st, 2017 (New York/London/Singapore/Bogota) – Superintendencia Financiera de Colombia (SFC), the Colombian financial supervisor, has joined the global member network of enterprise software firm R3 to further develop its FinTech strategy. In this way, the Colombian supervisor will stay up-to-date on the latest advances and implementations of distributed ledger technology (“DLT”) in financial services.

The SFC is the latest Latin American member to join R3’s growing regulatory community. In addition to SFC, R3 already works with a number of central banks and regulators around the world.

R3 collaborates with over 100 banks, financial institutions, trade associations, professional services firms and technology companies to develop commercial applications for the financial services industry that leverage the appropriate elements of DLT.

Members work closely with R3 to continue the development of Corda™, an open source distributed ledger platform for recording, managing and synchronizing financial agreements. Corda is heavily inspired by and captures the benefits of blockchain systems, but with design choices that make it able to meet the needs of regulated financial institutions.

In this regard, the Colombian Financial Superintendent, Jorge Castaño Gutiérrez, noted that this is a significant step for the Entity, since technology is fostering greater innovation inside and outside the financial system.

“This agreement with R3 contributes to the strategy we set in motion with the creation of the FinTech Group within the Superintendencia to learn the uses of this technology, which will provide efficiency and security of information to be able to accompany, support and endorse different processes within the industry, “declared the Superintendent.

David E. Rutter, CEO of R3, comments: “Our network of regulatory members around the world continues to grow at pace, and we are pleased to welcome SFC on board. Collaboration between regulators and the institutions they oversee is a critical component in ensuring futureproof development of distributed ledger technology.”
